How do I copy my address book from Eudora to WSU WebMail?

To copy your address book from Eudora, keep a few things in mind: Eudora saves its address book in a proprietary format that WebMail cannot directly import. The current recommended solution is to import your Eudora address book into Mozilla Thunderbird, then export your Thunderbird address book to WebMail. This requires you have Thunderbird installed on your system, and it can be downloaded from here.

This can be a confusing process. If you experience difficulty at any point in this process, contact the C&IT Help Desk for assistance.

  1. Import the address book from Eudora to Thunderbird.
    1. In Thunderbird, select "Tools," and then "Address Book."
    2. In the "Address Book" window, select "Tools," and then "Import." Click "Next."
    3. Choose "Eudora" from the list and then press the "Next" button.
    4. A progress bar will appear and the window will respond with "Imported address book Eudora Nicknames" by default (if you have a custom named Eudora address book, it will show that name instead of "Eudora Nicknames"). Click "Finish."
  2. Export the address book from Thunderbird.
    1. Click once on the "Eudora Nicknames" address book on the left side of the "Address Book" window.
    2. Select "Tools," and then "Export."
    3. In the "Export Address Book" window, name the file "Address Book," select "LDIF" (do not select "CSV") from the "Save as type" menu, choose "Desktop" as the save location and click the "Save" button.
  3. Import the address book to WSU WebMail.
    1. Log in to WebMail.
    2. Click on the "Address Book" link on the left side of the window.
    3. Once the Address Book page loads, click on "Import/Export" near the top of the page.
    4. Once the Import/Export page loads, make sure the "Select a file type to import" field is set to ".LDIF" (the same format you saved the address book to in 2.c. above).
    5. Click the "Browse" button next the the " Specify the file to import" field.
    6. Browse to your desktop, select the file "Address Book," and click the "Open" button.
    7. Choose what category to import the file into using the "Import to Category" menu.
    8. Most people will not need to makes changes to the "Language" and "Charset" menus, but if you are familiar with changes you need to set to meet your personal preferences, do so now.
    9. If you already have addresses in the WebMail address book and do not want to delete them, make sure the check mark appears next to "Add all imported..."
    10. Click the "Import Now" button and a new page should load confirming the number of addresses you have added to the WebMail address book.
