File sharing is a feature that allows you to share the files or folders on your computer over the network. By default, Windows operating systems prior to Windows XP Service Pack 2 have this feature turned on; but, in most cases, there is no need for it; and it represents a security vulnerability.

If you are NOT purposely sharing files with other people's computers in your home or office, turn this feature OFF!

For Windows 2000 and Windows XP (You must have administrative rights to perform this task)

1. Click Start —> Run.
2. In the Open box type: ncpa.cpl then click OK.
3. Right-click your active network connection, in most cases it will be Local Area Connection.
4. Then click Properties.
5. Uncheck the box next to File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.
6. Click OK to save the changed setting.

For Mac OS 9.x

1. On the Apple menu, click Control Panels.
2. Click File Sharing.
3. Uncheck the Enable File Sharing and Enable Program Linking boxes, then click OK.

For Mac OS X

1. On the Apple menu, click System Preferences.
2. Under the Internet & Network heading, click Sharing.
3. Under the Services tab, uncheck the Personal File Sharing, Windows File Sharing, and Personal Web Sharing boxes.
4. Uncheck the Remote Login and Remote Apple Events boxes, and then close the window.
