AccessID
The Wayne State ID that is your key to WSU electronic resources and services.
ACT
The American College Testing Co., Inc. is the parent organization of the ACT Achievement Test which is the preferred instrument for students applying to WSU.
Approver Tuesday
Deadline day for Approvers to review and approve timesheets for Payroll processing. This is typically the Tuesday after the end of a pay period. Note: holidays can alter the deadline schedules for timesheet submission and approvals.
Ask-A-Librarian
The University Libraries online reference service. Ask questions and get answers from a University librarian using chat or e-mail at www.lib.wayne.edu/help or IM at waynelibrarian through AIM (AOL).
assessment
Blackboard's teminology for anything that is a test, quiz, exam, etc.
Blackboard
An online learning system WSU faculty use to deliver all or part of a University course.
breadcrumb
A navigation technique near the top of a Web page that provides a trail of links back to the Website's home page.
CallTracker
A Wayne State problem tracking and ticketing system.
Certified Standard Reports
Reports that have been certified by the Business Area System Custodians and Report Writers.
CourseID
A unique identifer for courses in Blackboard. It is helpful to know when copying courses, requesting combined courses, and sending to support when encountering problems in a specific course.
CPU
Central Processing Unit--the part of a computer that interprets and executes instructions.
Data Mart
A repository of data used with E-Reports, which were replaced by ODS / Cognos summer 2006.
dial-in
A bandwidth connection, limited to 56Kbps, that uses a phone line and a phone modem.
display monitor
A device that accepts video signals from a computer and displays it on a screen.
E-mail Name
A name you choose and use in place of your AccessID for e-mail only.
E-Reports
Web-based reporting tool used with Banner systems before August 2, 2006.
Ethernet
The most common type of computer connection for a local area network (LAN).
EZProxy
EZProxy is how the University Libraries authenticates you as a WSU student, faculty or staff when you try to access any licensed online resource. Enter your AccessID and password in the EZProxy page to enter the resource.
firewall
A protective barrier that prevents unwanted sources from accessing a computer or network.
forwarding
The process of relaying e-mail from the AccessID e-mail address to a more preferred e-mail account.
hard drive
A computer data-storage device that stores changing digital information in a relatively permanent form.
I/O port
Input/Output port--Any socket in the back of the computer that you use to connect to another piece of hardware.
IPSEC
Short for IP Security, a set of protocols developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force to support secure exchange of packets at the IP layer.
Knowledgebase
A self-service repository of frequently asked questions.
laptop
A portable computer, small enough to sit on the lap, now more often called a notebook computer.
LDAP
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol -- a set of protocols for accessing online directories, such as the WSU directory.
Library Account
Use your Library Account to renew books, place and cancel requests for library materials, and to view a record of checked out items, fines, and other library information. WSU students, faculty, & affiliates login to your Library Account with your AccessID. To get to your Library Account, click on My Library Account at the top of the University Libraries homepage.
LISTSERV
An automatic mailing list server designed to facilitate e-mail communication among a group of people.
malware
Malicious software that gets installed on a computer.
Michicard
Michicard is statewide library borrowing program. Michicards are available through the University Libraries for currently enrolled students, faculty and staff. Present your OneCard at any service desk in the University Libraries and request a Michicard. Take that card to any participating Michicard library and you will be given guest borrower privileges at that library.
modem
A device used to connect computers by a telephone line.
MSIS
Medical School Information Systems
network
A system of interconnecting computers to allow the sharing of data.
NIC
Network Interface Card (usually referred to as an Ethernet card).
notebook
A lightweight personal computer, small enough to fit easily in a briefcase.
ODS
A data storage area that streamlines the retrieval of data for reporting and querying purposes.
OMR
A machine scannable Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) Form used for the high-speed capture of data.
operating system
Software that controls the hardware of a specific data-processing system.
optical drive
Computer drive that has lasers to see and read data on optical discs, such as CDs and DVDs.
override
The word "Override" will appear on the Required Action column of the Approver's Summary page when either the approver or superuser corrects or makes changes to a submitted timesheet.

PC Clinic
A place for WSU students and staff to take their personal desktop or notebook computers for repair.
Pending
The status of a timesheet that has been completed and submitted for approval.
Pipeline
A tool used to access online services at WSU.
proxy
A proxy is a person who can act as an Approver if the established Approver is not available to approve timesheets.
RAM
Random Access Memory--computer memory that can be accessed in any order.
remote access
Any connection to WSU's network and Web services originating from outside WSU's network.
Report View
A copy of a report-run that contains the parameters that were selected when the report view (copy) was created.
Respondus
A powerful tool for creating and managing exams that can be printed to paper or published directly to Blackboard. Exams are created offline in a familiar Windows environment and the software provides many time-saving tools, such as the ability to import existing exams from word processor files. Respondus is used at over 2,000 institutions worldwide.
Scantron
An Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) form specic to the Scantron Optical Mark Reader manufactured by the Scantron Corporation.
shared memory
When a video card does not have its own Video RAM (VRAM) and shares the system's RAM to render images. Shared memory is usually slower and takes up memory that other applications might use.

Unsolicited e-mail from an unknown source.
subnet
One physical network of an internetwork. Third set of numbers located in an IP address.
Super User - Web Time Entry
The central timesheet process administrators for a unit. They have super powers within WTE that allows for dealing with extenuating circumstances, and thereby keep a timesheet moving forward towards a paycheck.
Timesheet Approver
The individual responsible for reviewing and approving submitted timesheets. This is typically an employee's supervisor.
video card
The component responsible for producing the visual output from your computer.
VPN
Virtual Private Network
Web Time Entry
Web Time Entry (WTE) - electronic timesheet WSU employees now use or will soon be using.
WebMail
The WSU AccessID Web-based e-mail program, with built-in anti-virus protection
